Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens is an innovative intraocular lens, also known as IOL, designed to allow you to experience greater personalization of your vision after cataract surgery. At Regional Eye Associates, our cataract surgeons are proud to offer this advanced technology to our patients.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens, also called LAL, is an IOL that can be used in cataract surgery. Unlike traditional IOLs, the Light Adjustable Lens is the first and only adjustable IOL that can be customized after cataract surgery using UV light treatments to optimize your vision based on your specific needs and preferences.

This is made possible by the special photosensitive material used to create the lens. After the lens is implanted during surgery, you will return for a series of non-invasive UV light treatments.

These treatments work by gently reshaping the lens, allowing your eye doctor to adjust your vision to your desired outcome. The customization process with the Light Adjustable Lens is a collaborative effort between you and your eye doctor.

Together, you will determine the best vision correction for your lifestyle, whether that means excellent distance vision, improved near vision for reading, or a balance of both. This level of personalization sets the Light Adjustable Lens apart from traditional IOLs, which cannot be adjusted after the procedure.

At Regional Eye Associates, we understand that every patient has unique visual needs. Our experienced eye doctors will work closely with you to ensure that you achieve the best possible vision correction tailored to your individual preferences.

What is Cataract Surgery Like With the Light Adjustable Lens?

Cataract surgery with the Light Adjustable Lens is similar to traditional cataract surgery. The procedure typically takes less than thirty minutes, and you get to go home the same day.

First, your eye doctor will numb your eye with eye drops to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure. Then, your cataract surgeon will make a small incision in your cornea, remove the cloudy natural lens, and replace it with the Light Adjustable Lens.

Once the new lens is in position, the procedure will be complete. After cataract surgery, you will be given detailed instructions on how to care for your eye during the healing process.

This will include using eye drops to prevent infection and promote healing, as well as wearing UV protective glasses to shield your eye from ultraviolet light. It’s essential to follow these instructions carefully to ensure the best possible outcome.

What Are Light Treatments?

Once you’ve healed from cataract surgery, you will return for a series of UV light treatments with your eye doctor. During this painless procedure, your eye doctor will use a specialized UV light delivery device to precisely reshape the Light Adjustable Lens based on your specific visual needs and preferences.

You will have the opportunity to provide feedback on your vision and work with your doctor to fine-tune your vision over the course of a few light treatments. Typically, one to three treatments are needed over a few weeks to customize your vision to your desired outcome.

Once your vision has been optimized to your satisfaction, you will have  two lock-in light treatments to permanently set the shape of the lens. After this final treatment, you will no longer need to wear UV protective glasses, and you can enjoy your newly customized vision.
